A Leap for the Ages

No matter what we think, at the end of the day we do need a purpose in our life. There needs to be that centerpiece around which we can structure our journeys. Some people might argue that wrapping our lives around a sole purpose can create rigidity, but the kind of guidance it provides must also be considered. Over the years, humans have come to lead their lives with different driving forces steering them ahead. Some have been driven by personal progression, while a good chunk of other individuals have found comfort in the thought of greater good. Even though aiming for personal growth is of huge importance, it’s the latter one which has time and again triggered a positive transition in our lives. People motivated by the idea of improving lives of the masses have done things that others would hesitate to do. It’s their courage that has elevated us to a level where we now practically have the world in our hands. There are many elements that came into play to make this happen, but the biggest of them has to be technology. Rarely do you see something that makes you question every self-limiting belief you have ever held. Technology did that to us, and once we had a grasp of what it was trying to achieve, we really went along with it, and it was never same from that point onwards. If we want to see a physical representation of it, then we can easily turn our eyes to the medical field. The medical sector has grown on the back of many tech by-products, each one focused on reinventing healthcare for us. One such technology has been artificial intelligence. AI was looked upon as something that was restricted to science fiction, but it’s very much real now, and it is making all the right impact on us. You can detect this fact in Cleveland Clinic’s latest creation.

Researchers at the Cleveland clinic have come up with a new bionic arm that helps amputees in experiencing the functionality of a natural arm. It does so by activating sensory and movement components, as well as by making intuitive control possible. The device’s construction is as per the patients who have gone through targeted sensory and motor reinnervation procedure, which basically redirects neurons to skin and muscle in the residual limb. This presence of neurons is what helps the user in establishing a connection with the bionic arm.

Robotic prosthesis that deliver a sense of touch aren’t new, but by introducing movement into the picture, the team at Cleveland clinic has made a big leap. The researchers have equipped the arm with small robots that vibrate upon movement, resulting in kinesthetic sensory receptors in the muscles getting activated. With the help of this reaction, the user can get more aware of their arm, producing an organic experience that has never been felt before.
